Variance in pot-limit Omaha

Due to all poker variants being based on mathematics, mainly odds and probabilities, there is a lot of natural variance involved in the short-term results. Texas Hold'em is the most popular game on the planet right now but many Hold'em players are making the transition to Pot-limit Omaha and are finding that the variance in the latter is absolutely massive when compared to their usual game of choice. The edges in Pot-limit Omaha are much smaller than in Hold'em, where you often get your money in as a 70% favourite, sometimes even more. In Pot-limit Omaha it is common to be gambling for your entire stack holding just a 55% advantage over your opponent due to the sheer number of combinations holding four hole cards creates. Bankroll management is of the utmost importance to a Pot-limit Omaha player, not only to protect yourself from the variance of the game, where losing periods can extend over a large period of time, but to also aid your mentality too. If you play Pot-limit Omaha regularly you will often find yourself getting your money in as a favourite and being outdrawn or running strong hands into even stronger hands more than you would care to admit. The variance involved is enough to put even the most disciplined grinder on tilt. That last statement is one of the reasons why skilled Pot-limit Omaha players can find the game extremely profitable, especially when you consider that in any form of poker we make most of our money by taking advantage of the mistakes our opponents make. A player who has been on the wrong side of variance for an extended time or has lost three out of his last three all-in pots despite being a favourite is more likely to go on tilt, start playing sub-optimal poker which is a great result for you. Mental toughness is a great attribute to any aspiring poker player and watching Poker Videos will show you this, but if you want to make it as a Pot-limit Omaha player then mental toughness, along with a bankroll of at least 50 maximum buy-ins, is a prerequisite.

Bluffing

Bluffing is an integral part of poker. If you are unable to pull off a bluff then you will not be successful at poker, it is as simple as that. One of the best set of advanced poker tips I had the fortune of learning all revolved around making the perfect bluff and they have stood me in good stead so I will reproduce them here. When you make a bluff you are essentially attempting to tell a story to your online poker opponents that your hand is much stronger than it is in reality. If your opponents are to believe this story, and therefore fold their hand, your bluff has to be not only believable but also consistent with the hand you are trying to represent. Before you attempt a bluff a number of specifics need to be in place for it to stand a chance of getting through. One of the most important factors is your own image at the table. Your bluff is much more likely to succeed if you have been playing tight or have only gone to showdown with solid hands in the past few orbits. If the opposite is true you will often find yourself being called extremely lightly or even raised out of the pot as your bluff will look exactly like a bluff. The amount you bet when you are bluffing, and indeed betting with a strong hand, should offer your opponents unfavourable odds otherwise, like the example above, you will be called lightly and your chances of bluffing successfully will be massively diminished. If your bluff amount means your opponent is receiving good pot odds to continue then you are simply giving your money away. You also need to make sure that your betting actions are the same as they would be if you had the hand you are trying to represent. Imagine you have raised preflop with a pair of eights and get one caller. The flop comes down 2-6-9 and you make a continuation bet and are called. Now the turn is an Ace, you could fire again representing a hand such as Ace-King and unless your opponent has an ace they will find it difficult to call. However, if you had simply limped into the pot and made a bet on the flop, it would be difficult to bet again when the aces arrives as you would have been more likely to have raised preflop holding a good ace. A good spot to bluff is if you put your opponent on a busted draw of some kind. Flush draws are easier to read as a typical opponent will check/call bets when there are two of a suit on the flop or river and if the third suit does not come on the river they will check again. Now would be a good time to bet with almost any holding as unless your opponent has been playing a different hand a very strange way, or has managed to pair one of their holecards whilst chasing their flush, they will be hard pressed to call a significant bet on the river. Above all, before you attempt to bluff ensure your opponent is capable of folding hands. Amateur players will look you up with a wide assortment of hands so reserve your bluffing for those players who are capable of hand reading and letting go of marginal hands.

Unique email address required for each player

As of today, PokerDIY will now require a unique email address per user. It was originally an oversight that allowed users to share email addresses with different usernames - it is standard practise on most websites and social networks to have one email per user. We made the change to allow us to communicate with each player better - for example, when sending out league scoreboard reports. It also cuts down on spam bot user accounts who join with the same email and make a whole lot of bogus accounts. There were a couple of users sharing the same email (for legitimate reasons, usual for convenience) - we had to make some changes to these email addresses. The user who first signed up to PokerDIY will keep the original email. Any other account who had a duplicate email will have to change their email and re-verify their account on the next log in. This only affects 1% of the players on PokerDIY and even then you do not have to do anything - just follow the prompts when you log in. If you have forgotten your username or email don't forget you can request a Forgotten Password and enter either one. If you were using a duplicate email and you are not able to log in please contact us and we'll sort it out for you (you won't be able to do a Forgotten Password in this case as your email address will have changed). If you do not have your own email address it is very simple to set up a free one with Google, Hotmail or Yahoo. You can then recieve your own PokerDIY scoreboard reports and notifications. Re-stealing

If you regularly play multitable tournaments, both live and online, you will often find yourself in a position where the size of your chip stack becomes very awkward to play with. Once you are down to between 15 and 25 big blinds, you have too large of a stack to simply move all-in with but it is too small to raise and then have to fold. Once you are down to this number of big blinds, one option available to you, though not one I could recommend, would be to blind yourself down whilst waiting for a premium hand. This is extremely risky as you may not get dealt a good hand before your chips run out or your chips stack may become so small that even when you do find aces in the hole, you get three or four callers to your shove. Whilst a 15-25 big blind stack is not the nicest stack to play, it does open the door to a powerful move known simply as the re-steal. Basically, all you need to do is wait for someone to raise, preferably first-in in late position so there is a higher chance the raise is a steal attempt and then re-raise all-in. The move is high risk and works best against loose poker players with deep stacks as this player type is more likely to be stealing very lightly, which should leave you to pick up the blinds, antes and the chips used in the initial steal attempt. If your re-steal is successful you will usually add at least an extra five or six big blinds to your stack, a very helpful amount indeed. So which hands should you be re-stealing with? Many players see an ace in their hand and in an instant poker chips are flying into the middle of the table, however this probably is not the best idea unless it is a premium ace or one that is suited. This is because a lot of the time you re-steal with an ace, you will find that you are dominated by a better one. Suited connectors are brilliant for re-stealing, in fact nine-eight suite fairs much better against ace-king offsuit than ace-three does, despite the latter being a stronger hand. Pairs are also good for this as you are almost always going to be getting your money in at least a slight favourite over your opponent's range.

Regardless of how great you are at poker your short-term wins and losses will be more down to variance than skill levels. As the game of poker is based on mathematics, with odds and probability dominating proceedings, there is scope for results in the short term to fluctuate greatly from what would be expected. If you tossed a coin ten times it would be fair to assume that it would land five times on heads and fives times on tails. But over such a small sample size you would probably see seven of one side and three of the other and it would not be far fetched to think all ten tosses could result in heads being displayed. However, if you tossed the coin a million times your results would be almost exactly half and half as the large sample size has allowed the statistics to converge to the norm, Sample size is something you need to keep in your thoughts when you are playing poker, especially in cash games. For those players who play online Texas Holdem a significant sample size is regarded as 10,000 hands, which could take upwards of 100 hours of play if you only sat at a single table. This is one of the reason that many players play many tables, up to 24, at once so that the variance evens out and their results are true. Games such as Omaha poker are higher in variance due to the fact hands run much closer in value than in Holdem. In Omaha it is quite common to get all of your money in as a 55-60% favourite whilst in Holdem you will find yourself as a huge favourite on many occasions. You need to be aware that variance works both ways. It not only works against you but also works in your favourite/ How many times have you won with Kings versus Aces all-in preflop or caught a miracle card on the river when you were almost dead and buried? A trap weak players fall into is to blame their losses on variance but think their winning sessions are due to good play on their part. Deluding yourself is a recipe for disaster and has been the downfall of many players. Try not to be too influenced by short-term results and instead focus on making plays that will, in the long term, prove to be profitable.

A growing trend in live poker circles is players wearing headphones and listening to their favourite music whilst they are playing poker. Whilst the advantages of being relaxed and not having to listen to sometimes incessant, boring table chatter are easy for anyone to see, not paying attention to what is being said by your opponents is tantamount to leaving money on the table. Poker players love to talk, with brags about exploits or moans about bad beats being the top of their list of subjects to inform their table mates about. Just listening to the way they describe situations they have found themselves in can give you a good indication to their skills levels. For example, a player who talks about three-betting, donk-leading and re-stealing likely knows their way around a poker table whilst someone who is furious about a bad beat they have just suffered on another table may be about to go on tilt. Listening and asking your opponents about their usual games, stakes and preferences can also be a massive help when you have a big decision to make. Knowing an opponent regularly plays high buy-in tournaments or makes a living playing 10 tables of NL200 could and should influence the way you play against them. I was recently playing in a poker tournament where I heard a player talking to another one at my table about their preferred strategy early in tournaments. He said he preferred to gamble in an instant play poker later so I knew if I saw him splashing around in pots early doors then he was less likely to have a hand but would also be willing to go further with marginal hands If I were to make larger than usual value bets. Information like this is priceless. Finally, simply chatting and being friendly to those at your able can sometimes endear them to you so they are less likely to attempt to bluff you or call you down lightly. This is a subconscious action that people often do as they see you as a friend and do not wish to cause you any distress. Whilst it will not work all the time, it will work often enough to make it profitable in the long run.

A significant percentage of poker players believe they play the game perfectly but in reality they make numerous mistakes each time they sit down at a table. In fact some of the biggest mistakes they make are actually away from the table as you will find out below. One of the biggest mistakes made by those who play Texas Holdem is having a premature realisation of skill. We have all heard and read stories of players who burst onto the poker scene, winning large sums of money at cash games or winning a poker tournament who then are never heard of again or lose all of their money and more besides. The main reason for this failure after such great success is because the player begins to believe they are much better than they are due to their previous winnings. Poker is a high variance game and it is possible for even a weak player, who makes frequent poker related mistakes, to win big in cash games or find themselves winning a couple of tournaments simply with the right cards falling for them over a short period of time. This gives the player a massive boost in confidence, too much of a boost, and they start to play higher stakes far too quickly, against players far more skilled than them, and as a result they more often than not lose all of their bankroll. The skills needed to succeed as a poker player develop over time, they simply do not appear overnight so you do not have the right to sit down at medium to high stakes game from the get go and expect to be a winning player. Before you make plans to rub shoulders with some of the better players at higher stakes, you should ensure that you are actually a winning player at your current stakes. This means that you have been a consistent winner over at least 100,000 hands of cash games and literally hundreds if not thousands of poker tournaments before you should even consider moving up levels. The game can seem like the easiest one on the planet when you are winning but things can drastically turn for the worse in an instant poker can and will chew you up and spit you out if you attempt to progress too quickly. Be honest with yourself, are you as good as you think you are and do you really have the skills to take on good players? Has your success been over a long period of time or is it possible that you just went on a hot streak? These are just a few of the questions you need to ask yourself on a regular basis.

Short-handed cash games

The most popular form of online Texas Holdem is short-handed cash games. Live poker venues, such as casinos, are reluctant to spread this type of game due to the increased cost of extra dealers and floorspace, but those problems do not exist when playing online. Short-handed games, usually played with six players, are far more complex than their full ring counterparts as players are forced to play a wider range of hands, partly down to the fact the cost per round is higher due to each player having to pay the blinds more often. Skills you use in full ring games such as hand reading, bet sizing, position and pot control are needed in far greater quantities when playing short-handed. You also need to alter your playing style as the standard tight-aggressive game that is usually so successful in full ring games will find it more difficult to win in short-handed cash games. You simply have to play a wider range of hands otherwise you will become easy to read and exploit. You can afford to play more hands as there are less opponents to deal with which means there is less chance that one of them has a premium hand to play back at you. For example, if you make a raise from early position in a full ring game you will have eight or nine players to get through but at a short-handed game you will have at most five players for your raise to get through, almost 50% less. This means that hand strength differs greatly from short-handed to full ring. Pocket pairs gain more strength and even a hand as low as pocket twos will often be the best hand, at least preflop. Hands such as suited connectors actually fall in value as there are less opponents and therefore less implied odds for you to chase your draws with. Finally, as there are less players the speed of the game is much quicker, which in turn means players have to make more decisions per hour. In poker we make the majority of our money by capitalising on the mistakes of weak players after we have forced them to make a decision so more hands per hour and more tough decisions for weak players to make means you will potentially make more money. If you play poker online, particularly cash games, then you owe it to yourself, and your bankroll, to at least try short-handed games.

The game of choice for online poker enthusiasts is currently No-limit Texas Hold'em but one game is threatening its popularity and that is Pot-limit Omaha, a game that is action packed, creates huge pots and is currently in its infancy so it is full of weak players! On the surface Pot-limit Omaha looks like it would play very similarly to Hold'em but if you delve a little deeper it quickly becomes apparent that this is not the case and that the two games are indeed worlds apart. What would be the correct play in Hold'em is often completely wrong in Omaha poker and vice-versa. The primary goal of Pot-limit Omaha is to win your opponent's entire stack. You should not be overly interested in picking up small pots here and there, instead you should be looking to stack your opponent each time you contest a pot. You will pick up some small pots along the way but our main aim is to win full stacks. Be aware that hands run much larger in Omaha than Hold'em due to the sheer number of hand combinations each player has. As each player is dealt four hole cards they can make a the equivalent of six two-card Holdem hands and by the time the river is dealt every player remaining in the pot has 60 possible five-card combinations! Two pair in Hold'em is often enough to win the hand but in Omaha even a set is often going to be in trouble and rarely a big favourite over any of your opponent's holdings. On the subject of hands you should only ever draw to the nuts, especially in full ring games that are being played multiway. This means King-high flushes should often find their way to the much, as should non-nut straights. If you find yourself on the river with a non-nut hand and there is a possible straight of flush out there you can almost guarantee that one of your opponents will have the nuts! Finally, as the game plays bigger and is more volatile that its Hold'em cousin you require a larger bankroll to play from. A short-handed No-limit Hold'em player may be comfortable playing from a 30 buy-in bankroll but the equivalent Pot-limit Omaha player would need closer to 50 buy-in, though many prefer 100 to be truly comfortable.

Running the Perfect Home Game - Part 1 - Playing Cards

In this 4 part series we will look at the key aspects that make a home poker game run effortlessly on your part. As the host this is going to be your main priority, I have been to several home games where it took over an hour before the cards were in the air. In this part we will look at the different playing cards you can buy for your home game, and what a difference they can make. But before we start I would like to share with you a golden rule that should always be in effect. You are there to play poker! Not to play on the wii, ps3 etc. Yes it is a time to socialise but try keeping the open banter to a minimum and also don't see it as a time to get steaming drunk. Have a couple of course its a poker night but drinking and bad beats (made worse if by your mates) do not mix! Anyway moving on.... Playing cards remain the most important part of the best home games, get this right and everything will come together with time. Get it wrong and your players will be complaining all night long (even long after they have busted out - trust me) So lets start with the basics, these are paper playing cards and can be picked up from any toy shop, general store or supermarket in your area. They will range from £1 - £4 per pack. These are not great for general poker play turning the corners to see your cards will over the night cause them to bend and even crease marking them in the process. Once a card is marked it makes the deck useless and will need to be replaced ASAP. Makes of these cards include: Cardinal and Bee, For poker use I will give these cards a 3/10 (unless its all you can find they will make do for a night of poker - but buy a couple of decks) Moving on to the intermediate range of playing cards, this is where the camp starts to get divided. We are talking about the mid price range plastic playing cards. These cards can come in single or double packs ranging from £2-£5 per deck. These cards have been around the block and have been used (some still are) in many a casino out in Vegas. Most online poker sites will give you the ability to buy ex-casino playing cards straight from Vegas (www.drinkstuff.com). These are great to use at any table, they slide well as they are coated and they will hold up to a couple of nights peeking and folding at an average 10 seater game. Marking of the cards is also possible but at this middle price level they will withstand most scuffs and scratches. One last point on playing cards at this price level you may come across "four colour" playing cards. These are the same as the two colour for suits etc but it helps for spotting flushes etc that little bit easier. Makes of these cards include: Del Negro, and Torcellio These cards I will award 7/10 (great for general home games but still room for improvement) This leads us onto the Cadillac of playing cards, the advanced high end market. These playing cards come in either single or double packs and are 100% PVC. This means they can almost be bent over in half and spring right back, spill and stain proof (in normal play situations) they are the best cards to use. So much so that UK casinos all use these playing cards for all of their tournaments and even online poker sites such as fulltilt.com supply them to affiliated poker leagues. However they are quite expensive per pack, coming in at around £8-10 per deck however they will last a long time at your home games, so a couple of packs are all you are going to need. One point to note is some of the premium packs are collectors editions and will have decorative patterns for the different suits, these make for spotting flushes etc a little tough to start with. So you may want to avoid playing with these ones for the time being. Running the Perfect Home Game - Part 2 - Poker Chipsets

Hi and welcome to part 2 of our guide to the perfect home game, in part 1 we looked at the different playing cards available and which is right for your home game. If you missed it or just want a recap you can read them in our Home Games section. So moving on to part two, in this article we will look at the different poker chips currently available on the market. Of course getting the right type of chips ultimately comes down to personal choice for colour, design and domination (if you go for a home cash game) however the type and weight really should be your 1st port of call when looking to by a new chipset. Update: Have you seen the PokerDIY poker chip calculator? It can work out your starting poker chips stacks and it's free of course... Why is weight so important? Well in the world of poker getting the weight just right is a fine balance, to light and the chips can seem a little cheap too heavy and chip riffling can get a little loud for some people. There are chips thats start at 5g and these come with most cheap poker sets you can pick up at game stores and such like. These have a real plastic waxy feel to them and you will really not want to play with them, so steer clear of them. Next in line are the 11.5g which are one of the most standard chips you will come across. If you have ever seen photo's of poker chips more than likely they will be the 11.5g variety. The most common are "dice" chips called so because of the dice motifs around the edges of the chips. They come in most common colours red, green, white, blue, black, and even yellow and purple. Chips at this weight feel good in the hands, chip tricks are carried out with ease so showing off "the butterfly" is a walk in the park for your chip trick savvy players. The next weight class is the 14g poker chip, these are just like the "dice" chips however the centre of the chip is usually set in chrome or a metal embossed finish, This gives the chip a nice "clinking" sound when riffling your chips or spalshing the pot. These chips with the extra weight can look great at a home game and with the centre disc displaying different dominations, these can be used at both cash and tournament based nights. These also come in array of different designs and colours, of course with this amount of choice the price will always increase. Shopping around and looking for full sets will bring the price down further but you are still looking at between £50-£100 for a set of 500 chips. Ok, so I know what weight I want, now what about the type? Branded poker chipsets i.e. playboy, Jack Daniels and the like are always going to be a little more expensive than the standard "dice" chipsets. However the type of chip underneath is pretty much the same as any other 11.5g poker chip. So if you really want that branded chipset remember if you want to expand your set at any time you may only be able to buy them in sets of 200, 300, 500 and so on. Sticking with unbranded it opens a whole new world of options for poker chipsets. There are of course the standard ones we have mentioned before but there are so many more, from tri-colour edges to playing card suits edges. I would recommend looking at a selection of recognised retailers of poker chipsets to get the best price and type of chips you want. Finally there are poker chipsets that are seen as the best money can buy. These include Paulson cardroom / NPS, Nevada Jacks and the ever popular nexgen chips. These can for be bought in 25 packs from anywhere between £5-25, but they are worth every penny. The Paulson poker chips are as close as you can get to actually owning casino chips legally, they are around the 12/13g mark and retail for around £15 per 25. They will glide across the felt in large or small stacks as you make your raises. They can be a little too good for some home game players, especially if ribs are involved! Running the Perfect Home Game - Part 3 - Poker Tables

Hi and welcome to part 3 of our guide to the perfect home game, in part one 2 we looked at the different poker chipsets available and which is right for your home game. If you missed it or just want a recap you can read it here (shark-stats.co.uk/articles) In this part of the 4 part series we are going to look at the different types of poker tables available for you to buy for your home game. Getting a table or cloth is vital to get the game running at a good speed, playing off the kitchen table with cards sliding all over the place just isn't the impression you want to give. especially after you have spent time getting the perfect chipset and playing cards to use. At the budget end of the scale you can buy a felt that sits directly on the table, normally they are green with a fold line around the inside. You can get red, blue and black ones if you look around enough. However playing on these can be a nightmare as there are no weights on the corners to hold it in place. You could add these but again its an extra expense. One upside to this is folding the table cloth away and storing it doesn't take up that much space. Cleaning it however, I would only dry clean it and it would cost more that the cloth is worth! So moving up the scale to around the £20-£40 you can pick up a either a octangle two-fold 8 seater tabletop or a 8 seater tri-fold rectangle tabletop. Starting with the octangle tabletop first these come in either a vinyl backed version or a reversible tabletop. The tabletop does what is says and will sit on your dining room / bar table and with 8 drinks / chip trays these work as weights to stop the tabletop from moving around. It does seat 8 players conformable but anymore and it would become quite a squeeze. Keeping it clean is not a huge problem for the vinyl backed version as it seems to be scotch guarded well against beer and wine etc. so a quick wipe down if the worst does happen keeps the game flowing. The reversible one however doesn't seem to have this protection so any spills need to be mopped up quickly and then left to dry. Flipping it over and changing the chip trays over is the only hassle really for this particular tabletop. Moving onto the rectangle version this also comes as reversible with pop out chip trays, again if there is a spillage it would need the same care as above. As with both tables there are markings on them for blackjack and a fold line respectively. These raised markings can catch the cards as they are dealt. Again not a huge problem as you will get used to dealing on these tabletops in no time. Around the £80-£150 mark you will start to come across free standing tables with fold out legs both in the round and rectangle varieties. These are great if you have the budget and the standing room in your home. With vinyl cushioned runners and deep set drinks holders, these tables are well worth the money. Seating 8 people and a dealer at the table is not a problem with plenty of elbow room for both players and dealer alike. Of course if you have the room for a permanent poker table in a dedicated room in the house you would want to really splash out and get a table, that no only is comfortable to play on but also has a little character to it as well. With this in mind you could start out with a table that wouldn't be out of place in a card room like the Vic in London or the Dusk Till Dawn poker room in Nottingham. These professional tables boast speed cloth, metallic racetracks, chiptrays and drop boxes for buyins, rebuys and addons etc. Looking at these tables you would think these would sell for the 5k mark but these can be picked up direct from the manufacture for around £500-£1000. this would include all of the options above and a custom printed motif on the felt. So there you have it a break down of the types of poker tables available on the market that will fit your budget and your home game. Whatever you choose in the long run with the right cards, chipsets, table and players your home game will only go from strength to strength. Running the Perfect Home Game - Part 4 - Rules and Structure

Hi and welcome to our final part of this 4 part series "Running the Perfect Home Game". In the past 3 sections we covered playing cards, chipsets and lastly the different poker tables available on the market. In this last part we are going to look at the type of structures that can make a home game run smoothly as possible. I have been to many a home game where the buy-in has not been defined or even the type of game we were playing has not been set. The best thing for home games is communication to all players. There needs to be a clear understanding of the rules whilst in the game and also external rules such as smoking, drinking and the like. It may sound a little extreme to set so many rules but without a defined structure it will change the way people play at the table. Take for example if its a no-limit Hold’em game with 3,000 starting stack no rebuys. With the right clock setup this would be a great tight game with good poker being played. Change it to a rebuy event after one of your mates has been knocked out will annoy the other players and you will have nothing but moaners the rest of the night. So if you plan to play no-limit with no rebuys stick to it. If you want a rebuy event set the rules before and if need be set a cap to the amount of rebuys to stop it turning into a crap shoot. One structure that I have used at many a home game is a 30 min clock, 5000 starting stack, blinds starting at 100/200 and it’s a freezeout. The blinds then increase as follows: Level 1 – 100/ 200 Level 2 – 200/ 400 Level 3 – 300/ 600 Level 4 – 400/ 800 Level 5 – 500/ 1,000 Level 6 – 600/ 1,200 Level 7 – 800/ 1,600 Level 8 – 1,000/ 2,000 Level 9 – 2,000/ 4,000 Level 10 – 3,000/ 6,000 Level 11 – 4,000/ 8,000 Level 12 – 5,000/ 10,000 This structure allows for some great poker as the blinds are not increasing too quick, meaning if you have a few slow dealers you won’t be blinded out before you get a chance to play A your game and pick your spot. Another addition to the home game that will help no end is a clear blind timer (see PokerDIY Tourney Manager). Missed “blinds up” shouts will be a thing of the past and it will keep your game running on time. So remember you have taken the time to get the best playing cards, poker chipset and poker table to make your home game look professional. All that is left to do is perfect a structure that everyone understands and will know the rules of every time they sit down to play. iPhone Poker App Review - Blind Timer

App: Blind Timer Cost: £1.79 Developers: digitalsyrup.com I came across this app and I though would just be a glorified stopwatch. However once I installed it and loaded her up I was plenty surprised at what lurked under the surface. The App is called "Blind Timer" and can be found by searching the app store via your iphone on iTunes. It comes in at £1.79 and straight of the bat the price is more than reasonable. So what do you get for you money? Update: If you want a free poker blind timer/chip calculator etc. then check out our very own PokerDIY Tourney Manager! The main screen displays the time remaining for the level, how long before a break, which level you are currently at and how many remain, blind levels and average stack. All of these sections are clearly shown and switching from portrait to landscape allows more room for the clock to be shown. Then you have the players, addons and rebuy sections. These are simple increase / decrease options with the main settings being held in the options menu which is accessible below. You then have a Start and user break button which do exactly what they say. The buttons are big enough to use accurately even in low light of a poker room or home game. As mentioned above the options are broken down into two main sections the payouts and the settings tabs. The payouts section covers the initial buyin, addons and rebuy costs. The only downside to this section is the areas are quite small to select and can take a couple of tries. Once accessed however it makes light work of processing the payout structure as there are three preset options to choose a couple include 70/30 and 65/25/10 splits. If you want to change the split you can do so for up to 5 places. It would be nice to see an option for more paid places but this may appear in an updated version. Moving on to the settings tab this controls the amount of levels, player counts and chip counts. You can also save tournament teamplates via the "edit" button, these can then be selected via the roller option on the main settings screen. This is a nice addition to the App as setting up a tournament each time you want to use it would become rather tiresome. Overall this is a great app if you are running a small home or league game and need to relay on something other than a stopwatch or a timer on your mobile. The payout structure again is a huge plus point as you know where you stand regarding the structure. I have used this for several home games and it has not crashed once. So if you are in the market for a inexpensive blind timer and don't want to go the laptop with software route and you have an iphone, I would recommend this app. Rating: 4 out of 5

iPhone Poker App Review: PokerBuddy

App: Poker Buddy Cost: £0.59 (On Sale) Developer: Origin8 This week Shark-Stats have been using origin8’s “Poker Buddy” for the iPhone to run a few poker tournaments for a small group of friends. The app is on sale from the app store for only £0.59 which already makes it great value for money. Update: If you want a free poker blind timer/chip calculator etc. then check out our very own PokerDIY Tourney Manager! Once you have installed and open it up for the 1st time you are greeted by a slick looking interface. The options are easy to access with the setup, network and start buttons large enough to select and see. This section covers all of the basics chips, blinds and prize structure all have their own specific areas. The options for chips/money and blinds are easily edited from the menus amount of rebuys etc are changed via a wheel option. The starting stacks, rebuys etc are changed individually in the same way, you need to select each area before using the wheel option. The buy-ins. Rebuys etc are all setup in the same way. Moving on to the prize structure this allows you to set the prizes for the top 10 places. You need to set them up via percentages, using increase and decrease buttons. Once all parts of the structure has been set up you can save your tournament to access another time via the load tournament option. This section is easy to use and once you know your way around it setting up different tournament structures will be a breeze. PokerBuddy Network: One of the main features of “Poker Buddy” is the option to connect to other iPhone over a network to share the tournament information. This is a great feature if you have more than one table and want everyone to see the timer and handle KO’s, rebuys etc. Also there is the option to email your players details of the game, if anyone wants to see the timer via the internet an email is sent out to your contacts address. This gives them a link to follow which displays the timer, players and what level the tournament is at. Post tournament an email is then sent to the players with the tournament details including places, KO in round, rebuys used etc. This is a great tool for poker leagues who want to get all of the information out quickly and accurately to their players. PokerBuddy, Running of the Tournament: Once you get the poker tournament underway you are greeted with the timer screen. Here you can access the prize structure, player list and blind levels. If you have 8 or less players in the poker tournament poker buddy will show their iPhone contact photo . From here tapping on their photo or name will show the action menu. You can knockout players, add rebuys or add-ons at a touch of a button. The only couple of problems I have come across is if you click addon or rebuy and they have not there is not an undo button, so just make sure you get the right player etc. Also if for any reason you need or want to change the blind levels during the tournament I could not find an option to do so, so I manually had to increase them at set points. Apart from these points the overall operation of the tournament is seamless. When the tournament is underway a push of the screen will pause the clock and pushing it again will unpause. PokerBuddy Conclusion: This is a great poker iPhone application and has a lot of scope to bring something extra to your poker tournaments. There are of course areas that could be improved as mentioned earlier. But taking this into account the emailing of tournament stats is a welcome feature and something I would always be using. For this application I will give it 4 out of 5 based on the current version. Do you agree with this review or did we miss something?

As this media has expanded it has captured the imagination of many web developers and we can now see media rich websites with player profile videos, hand by hand analysis tools and even videos of the latest poker show streaming from the web. PokerDIY is one of the largest social networks exclusively for poker players - designed to connect players for home poker games, online tourneys or live poker anywhere in the world... The strange thing is poker players are normally solitary creatures who don't want to chat to other players at the tables, let alone about their hands they are playing. So why is there a shift to post your hand histories for other players to dissect and comment on? Well poker has moved on and so has the community that plays it, so much so that if you don't post on or even read certain forums you are shunned by certain players. So with so much choice out there, where do you start and do you stick with one site or spread yourself between several? We have picked two other social networking poker sites besides PokerDIY to look over and give you an insight to what is available to you. Blackbeltpoker is the brain child of Irish Open Winner and VIC playing Neil Channing. The site is a clean and inviting affair, strong bold colours and content that makes you want to spend time reading. Not the normal rehashed articles and poker news you see on other sites. The premise behind blackbeltpoker is a simple one, you sign up and you are assigned a white belt. Then by contributing to the site with comments, articles and board posts you may move up a grade to green belt etc. with the ultimate goal being to earn a black belt status. The site is in its early stages however it already boasts over 1200 players actively posting. There is a online poker room planned for the near future and this looks like it will be on the iPoker network with a custom skin for blackbeltpoker players. The community is a friendly one, with posts being sent to "boards" of your current grade of belt. Like most social working sites you can add friends to your profile and follow "how they are running" via status updates, as well as their board posts. The best way to get the feel of the site is to post often with constructive questions or answers to posts. Also there are the odd player created tournament played on pokerstars, where you can play against any level of belt and trade stories afterwards. With Neil Channing and other pros in Vegas, blogging to the site about their WSOP news, it gives you a great insight into the lives’ of professional poker players. Also With articles and interviews being posted throughout the week this site is going to go from strength the strength and makes it the place to be if you are a European poker player. Pokerspace has been created to fill the gap between myspace and facebook for poker players. The site is clean and crisp with all of the different areas clearly defined. It caters to all levels of poker players and all types of games be it cash, limit or no limit. There is a mixture of both user created and site created content in the form of interviews, videos, hand rankings, blogs and forum based posts. Referrals are also readily available with many poker rooms having special offers if you signup via pokerspace and you can also earn PS points as a result. Some of these are rakeback based and some are matching deposits up to 100% and so on. These are not intrusive and after a while you zone out on them when reading through the posts and other content. The school section is a great addition to the site and will allow you to move up the ranks buy taking course quizzes. These can be based on any poker related topic from bankroll management to calculating pot odds. These are all there to help you tone your game to the best it can be. Just like the other poker networking sites you can add "buddies" to your profile and share status updates and postings with them. Another addition to the buddy system is you can create a "poker crew" and other groups with your buddies, here you can enter pokerspace's own crew cups where you can play as a team for trips to Vegas, Canada and the like. One of the other draws of pokerspace is the chance to earn PS points, to use on the site. These are accrued by posting blogs, answering poker related puzzles / school quizzes and taking part in surveys. The PS points can then be spent in a varity of ways, these include t-shits, duffelbags and even poker training sessions Overall pokerspace is a great site with over 40,000 users, from all different ranges of skill levels. Also with a new VIP program being implemented soon its a great time to log on and get posting or even great a crew.

Poker Player Staking - An Overview

A trend that has really come to fruitarian with the 2009 WSOP is the art of staking. Now of course staking players has been around for years and some people have made a lot of money out of it. Some however are only getting into the swing of staking and as such as heading to the paddock and end up backing a donkey. Where can I stake poker players? There are quite a few poker staking sites that are popping up all over the net. I would however stick to the well established ones, the other advice I would give is remember the 3 R’s read, read and read some more. Remember good poker players on the forums want you to back them, they want to do well and share in the good times. Some however just want to play in the big ones and try their luck to end in the money by using yours, so reading up on the players is paramount to success. How do I stake poker players? Most staking happens on the major poker sites such as pokerstars and Full Tilt, there are of course are others that cater for many other poker rooms and networks. After you have checked out the stats, reviews and have a general feel for the player you want to stake, its time to buy-a-piece. A player will sell stakes at set percentages and cost and it is up to you to decide how much you want to stake. This can range from as little as 1% to the full 100% stake and everything in-between. Using your account you select the amount and then choose to transfer the funds across to the player, this is either done via depositing to the site or a transfer option on your poker room account. So how do I follow my staked poker player? Any good staked player will post a rail summery for you to follow, this is normally on the sites forum. They will post the starting hand of the tournament, maybe a few big pots and if the worst happens they will post the busted hand history to the rail forum. This keeps the player and the staker’s in constant contact and if you are able to rail the table live this is also an option. (If you are going to rail check with the player first, as to many people spectating the player can get a little daunting. In some examples observer chat has been used improperly and has caused poker players to tilt and bust out early.) If it is a live event that the stake is for the poker player can use twitter to send out updates of their position, stack sizes and big pots they are in. If you are following the action via twitter don't tweet the player back while they are in play it could go against a tournaments rules same as mobile phone usage etc. Can I really make money staking poker players? If you have the energy and time to put into reading players stats, looking at form and have an eye for a winner then yes you can earn some money this way. However remember if you stake a player and they lose there is no getting your money back, think of it as backing a horse they win, you win and if they lose....you get the picture. This could easily have been the clash of some of the extravagantly named players I had seen on British TV’s first poker broadcast, Late Night Poker. The ensuing exchange certainly played out like a hand of Texas Hold’em, as Steve Bellis took on five potential investors, and got a call from two, with his business The Nuts Poker League. Pub poker And so my interest in pub poker was ignited. Several thousand players, playing across England, Scotland, and Wales, play for points, which can mean prizes, as qualifiers over a 3 month season go on to compete for poker paraphernalia, cash, and even holidays to Las Vegas at their Regional Finals and then onto the National Finals with an £8,000 prize pool. As such, the weekly games are often keenly contested, and with this I would like to share my views on how to play the structure, a who’s who of pub poker players, and how to rack up the points to ensure your qualification for the Finals. With an average of 20 players, I run a tight 3 hour structure. Nine blind levels, with six at 20 minutes and three at 15 minutes, allows time for two short breaks. A 3,000 starting stack gives each player 50 Big Blinds, as the seat draw is made and ‘shuffle up and deal’ is announced. With a fast approaching break after one hour and blinds recommencing at 200/400 the average stack will only have around 10 Big Blinds, with which to make their assault on a final table place – earning them points towards their league tally. As such, tight play is only possible for the first level or two, before opportunities need to be exploited and chips amassed. Even with a modest increase to 4,000 chips by the break, all-in play is fast approaching. I look to push with 7-10 Big Blinds, in the early to mid-stages of the tournament, as waiting any longer will mean having to push with a much wider range and will allow others to call with a much wider range too. A lose-lose situation. Playing in early, middle and late stages The early stages usually play out in one of two ways: with four or five players limping to see each flop presenting the opportunity for you to limp, in position, with suited connectors, Ax suited, Kx suited, and small pairs, in the hope of flopping a made hand or draw. See as many flops as you can, whilst a cheap price is offered, as this will be your only opportunity to do so in the tournament. Raising with anything other than a premium hand will often only act as a pot-sweetener, with each player in turn calling your raise. Where play is faster, usually instigated by either Kostas the Jackal or The Great White (two of our most aggressive Tuesday night regulars), look for opportunities to extract maximum value with premium hands, trapping, where appropriate, with a good chance of being paid off. Many players will be looking to bluff ‘safe’ flops and exploit any signs of passive play with aggression – a great opportunity to slow-play big hands. They will often find it difficult to fold big pre-flop hands that have missed on the flop, or that have connected but are behind to your hand. In the later stages of the tournament, players will tighten up, as usual, and you should be prepared to makes raises, in position, with a wider range to pick up valuable blinds. Many players will have an understanding of basic text book poker strategy, possibly having read Harrington on Hold’em as an example. Do not slip into a style of play that becomes too predictable. Mix it up. Vary your bet sizing. Keep them guessing. However, some will also be guilty of over-estimating their skill level, perhaps they may have read Gus Hansen’s book and champion a looser style, as seen employed on the High Stakes Poker and Poker After Dark programmes. They will try to emulate their TV poker heroes, but without understanding effective strategic play that makes this style successful. Be aware of these players and be wary of trying to bluff them. Use the check-raise and float more often where they are likely to have missed the flop. All-in-all, employing this type of play should give you a decent chance of regular finishes on the final table. Throw in a few top 3 finishes or the occasional win and you should secure your qualification place. Drink like a fish – play like a fish? But this is pub poker! Poker played in the pub! Where men-folk gather to drink the local brew! In fact, downing several glass of Rose wine, followed by aftershocks and cocktails of many colours is the order of the day at our Thursday night venue. These players often arrive with good intentions, but as 10 o’clock approaches, taxis are ordered and a night up-town beckons. These players will now be happy to shove their chips in with any two cards, in the hope of being called and busted out of the tournament. You will not see this play made on the GUKPT or the WSOP. Be aware of your players, listen to what they say about which poker books they read, or which TV players they aspire to play like, but most importantly listen out for what time their taxi is booked and keep a mental note of their alcoholic unit consumption!

Playing the big stack

All tournament players love having a big stack of chips in front of them as it gives them the freedom to play whatever style they want to and also gives them an avenue to win even more chips from timid players scared to tangle with them. There are two way which you can have a large stack, one is at the beginning of a tournament when you are generally 100 big blinds or deeper though this is not nearly as exciting as if you are the biggest stack at the table or in the entire tournament later in the game. In the first example tournaments essentially play like poker cash games but in the latter you can really use your stack to your advantage. The first thing you need to realise is that the more chips you have in comparison to the rest of the field the less they are worth. If you this concept seems alien to you imagine the winner of this year's WSOP Main Event. He bought 30,000 tournament chips for $10,000 making them worth $3 each. However, the winner will have accumulated all 219,570,000 chips in play and he will exchange them for the $8,944,138 first prize money, valuing the chips at $0.04 each! This concept means you can afford to play much looser as a big stack than if you had just started the tournament although do not fall into the trap of calling with the worst of it just because you think you can afford it. You should play aggressive poker though and put pressure on your opponents as many will simply get out of your way as you have the ability to bust them out of the tournament. Capitalise on players looking to avoid confrontation by raising them preflop and even three-betting with not only premium hands but speculative hands such as suited connectors. This will often see you take the pot down preflop but on the times you are called you stand the chance of flopping a big hand or draw and winning a substantial pot from your opponents. You should be aware that as the big stack all eyes will be on you. If you play online poker and have managed to acquire a large stack early in the tournament then a number of players will assume that you won all the chips by playing loosely and will approach you accordingly. If this is the case and you suspect your opponents are simply making a play at you be prepared to call them down lightly and show them who the boss is!

Every single poker player on the planet makes mistakes at some point during a typical session but the better players amongst us make less frequent errors than the weaker set of players. Most of the money you make from poker comes from the mistakes made by others, which is why the opening sentence of this article is so obvious and why learning from and correcting mistakes is so important. Poker players sometimes refer to their mistakes as leaks, as in leaks a plumber would face in their daily routine. Leaks can be large and obvious or they can be small, almost insignificant at the time but in the long term more costly that a big leak. Big leaks, or mistakes, are easy to spot and rectify and although usually expensive at the time they are usually uncommon. A perfect example would be if you folded a Royal Flush each time you were dealt one. Whilst the mistake itself would be huge as you would be folding an unbeatable hand, the cost over a typical year would be minimal as you would only expect to be dealt one such hand every 700,000 hands, or there abouts. However, a small leak, one that does not cost much at the time but is made frequently can be extremely damaging to your bankroll and overall profits. Imagine you make a small mistake that costs you just £0.50 each time you make it but you make it every 100 hands you play, then over time this seemingly insignificant loss will cost you much more than folding a Royal Flush. If you played just 10,000 hands a month then this mistake would cost you £600 every year, imagine what you could do with that money. One major advantage of playing online poker compared to live poker is that there is a plethora of poker software that can be used to analyse your game in minute detail. A program such as Holdem Manager will help you to go through every single hand you play and find areas where you made a mistake. Maybe you should have raised instead of called when you were on a flush draw, maybe you should have let go of your pocket jacks preflop, who knows but it is important to plug those small leaks as soon as humanly possible before you haemorrhage away your hard earned poker bankroll.
