noob player with noob questions about rake

Hello guys, quick question for you.

Please excuse my ignorance here I've tried looking for the answer yet not managed to find it.

I'v got 2 accounts on fulltilt and pokerstars and only recently learned about rake. Iv seen several websites that offer rakeback, however i just wonder because i now have an account if i can still claim rakeback or is this not possible?

ps: Also just a question on the this rakeback, why do websites offer it back or manage to even get it back when i thought this was the way poker websites made their money, so giving a percentage back works in what way for it being beneficial for them?

I was just wondering if you go into your full tilt academy and activate a challenge that would potentially earn you credits before playing a ring game, sng or mtt.
I usually do but I try not to act according to the challenge, meaning playing a certain hand the way stated in the challenge.
When I want to complete challenges worth 400+ points in a cash game I will go to .01/.02 and follow the challenge to earn the credits. Does anyone else do this?
I apologize if this is not in the proper forum section.

I am an inventor age 70 who is patent pending on an enhancement to holdem poker. Notice I did not say a new game. I am not reinventing the wheel. I can increase action 10-20% pre-flop and flop. This would have a poitive effect on rake plus reduce those nights where a player doesn't get any action on his quality starting hands. And the rules of play would remain verbatim on the sites and math would remain unchanged. Starting AA at 220-1, start with a pair and flop set 7.53-1 against, outs counted same, etc.
Even contacted same again when I realized that a side effect would greatly reduce subtle collusion, the most sucessful kind. Got same rresults. Ring around the rosie with customer support marketing, floor managers, product development, etc at all the on-line poker sites till I get no reply or form letter thanking me for my suggestions??
Occassionally am told they do not want to limit table selection and it's impossible to prevent players using chat, skype. email etc to share information. Evidently they believe that those 2 components are enough to make subtle collusion profitable. All i wanted was an email from a decison maker or a chance to pitch my idea in a 2 minute phone call.
Got similar result from platform suppliers who wanted to sell me something like a poker room. LOL
I had a patent a few years back for a blackjack enhancement and got replies from decison makers at digital table manufacturers, casino's etc. Unfortunately my game was only designed for low limits and they did not feel it was a big enough market. But they did listen!!!!
And I got referrals to these people from reporters mostly. So far not one reply from any on-line poker reporters or radio show hosts.
Seems like they know no enhancement to holdem is possible. Good thing draw poker players did not think that way. Or 5 card stud. Or 7 cad stud. Still amazed at seeing on Wizard of odds Q&A and similar sites holdem players asking if it's harder to get a straight flush in 7 card or holdem. LOL
I am 500 miles frrom Vegas , have offered to pitch my game in person and if they think I am an idiot they can pitch me out in the street therrselves or have security do it.
Sure would at lease like the opportunity to be proven wrong.
The only reason I do not post full details is I don't think I can collect license fees from the Isle of Man. Hoping to license my idea
to deep pockets for protection.

Why have FT just gave me a $100 bonus to clear in 21 days?

Thanks full tilt but does this happen to every player once they clear their original deposit bonus? And what will be the fastest way to clear this, i am a full ring player no limit, and im only really rolled for 2NL if im following really good BRM? should i just stick to multi tabling this or is there any magic ways to get fast full tilt points?

So wait - its illegal to check results databases like PTR while sitting at a table??

I've done that since I found out about ptr... I never knew. Why is that illegal, when using a tracker to record stats isnt? Because ptr is everywhere all the time I suppose? Anyone have any info on why ptr is a no-no while playing?

It always feels soooo right in the moment.. And it ends soooo wrong! I've learned this lesson before many times so why do I still call an all in like this? Thats $2.11 I could have saved. I was like, "Theres no way this guy has KK, AA, Q6/8, 66, or 88... D'OH!"

Would this play be profitable in the long run though? Definitely not in this situation.. right?

10k Hands now in the books

According to Poker Tracker I now have logged 10335 hands of NLHE on Full Tilt (About 98% 5NL). It has taken me 17 days.

Here are some numbers:

Vpip: 15.67
PFR: 10.24

Now those numbers are skewed as I went on serious tilt for about 2k hands and was playing a LAGGY 24+vp.

I've lost $ 48.49. I was down about $ 63 before coming out of a nose dive and playing better.

However I feel like I have learned soooo much about Poker and myself. I have learned about the importance of table selection, the invaluable tool that Power Tracker is. I have also learned some key points:
1. Don't go broke with a single pair. As a general rule I will not call a river bet with one pair if I've faced agrression on 2 of the 3 streets unless I have a really good read that my opponent was on a draw that missed or I sense a bluff or perhaps someone who overvalues their hand, (like when I have AK on a A9963 board and an opponent has Ace-Deuce)
2. Do not call 3 bets OOP. Period. Unless you are on the button it's Raise or fold preflop to determine the strength of your hand. It's better to muck QQ or JJ to 4 bets and lose 20% of your stack before the flop than to lose it all after the flop.
3. Tight is right and tighter is righter. Especially for starting players. When you are in the pot make sure you've got the goods otherwise you will be in a lot of tricky spots with dominated hands.
4. Try not to play your blinds at all. Especially the Small Blind. Set-mining is not profitable because even if you flop a set you might not get paid off. Calling to complete with pretty cards is a recipe for disaster. I don't know how many times in the beginning I played Q10 from the SB and caught middle pair and a gutshot or top pair weak kicker and a backdoor flush and start pouring money down the drain chasing draws OOP. Fold these hands, maybe complete with a sm pp but do not call raises with them. This includes hands like TT,99,88 which are just horrible hands in raised pots OOP. If you have JJ+ raise otherwise fold and save your money.
5. Poker is a battle for the blinds. Steal often. If you have a TAG image it is easy with just about A2C. If action is folded to you raise and steal. This will allow you to keep your head above water for the right moment.
6. You have to be patient. For a TAG player your moment may take hours to arrive. Be prepared to fold, fold, fold until the right moment comes and you take your opponent's stack.
7. If you don't enjoy the mental challenge of Poker and want to think about it and analyze it constantly then don't play seriously.
8. Set aside time for poker. Don't try to answer e-mails, look at porn, do work things, make dinner or talk on the phone.
9. Remember most of all it is important to be the aggressor. If you bet or raise you can win two ways. If you call you can only win one. When in doubt raise you will gain information on the strength of your hand vs. your opponent. Sometimes you will fold the better hand but that is better to do sometimes than to constantly bleed chips and lose pots you had no business being in the 1st place. Once you have the nuts (like flopping a set on a rags and rainbow board, or making the nut straight or flush then you can call all the bets you want. Until then when in doubt raise or fold. There are exceptions to this like c/c a flop with an overpair or TPTK in order to control the size of the pot but be ready to test your hand's strength before the river. If you have QQ or KK and the flop has an Ace it is better to bet out when you are OOP because if you check and your opponent bets you won'y know if they're bluffing or have an Ace.
10. Cash games are not tournaments so don't fall in love with AK. At 5NL I see lots of players try to get it all in with AK. At 5NL once a player gets to 3bets he is less likely to fold so without the FE you get with Big Slick in a tournament it's a pretty weak hand that usually can only make TPTK which is rarely going to take anyone's stack (well except the short stackers who wait for a pocket pair and shove) which brings me to the point of short stackers. Always look at your opponent's stack. Before you 3 bet a short stacker decide whether you are willing to get all in with your hand. If not don't bother. Also you can't set mine or play high implied odds hands (like suited connectors) because when you hit you won't get enough return on your investment for all the times you miss and fold.
most of this is ABC and not original, just thinking out loud and having fun playing Poker.

I expect to be somewhat profitable at the 20k hand mark. I'll let you know.
Rake Calculator for Micros

Hey, I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find a rake calculator for micro stakes. Or at least tell me/show me the formula they use for determining the rake.

On most rake/rakeback calculators, the lowest limit they provide is 50nl. I'm trying to find the rake calculation for 2nl-10nl.

Any help is appreciated.
Ruling issue - please help

I played a live tourney last night when the following hand happened, I would like to know what you all think of the ruling made as I am still bothered by it.

14 left in tourney of 65 starters.

8 Handed, blinds 800/1600 ante 200.

I am 1 off button with 6000 chips

Look down at KQs and decide this is as good a spot as any to get my chips in once everyone folds to me.

Get very lucky as I hit a straight against the small blinds Aces all in.

Now here we go...

The dealer sorts things out and scoops chips my way, I look at it and say hold on, I don't have enough chips. The dealer had sorted out the chips (small blind had me well covered) and gave me 7800.

He called the tourney manager and the ruling was that 'as the dealer had started to ruffle the cards the last hand was dead and we move on'.

What do you think? :hmmmm:

Frank began his debate with Leno by pointing out the obvious … that the federal government was wasting an opportunity to collect billions in taxes by not legalizing and regulating online poker in the United States.

“We now make it illegal for adults to gamble on the internet,” Frank said. “If you have some guy who wants to play poker on the Internet, we say it’s illegal. Why [anybody] thinks that’s the government’s business is beyond me. We could make billions of dollars a year by making it legal and taxing it.”

Though Frank had the obvious support of the audience, Leno was quick to disagree, pointing out that live gambling is acceptable because it isn’t readily available.

“Vegas works because you have to go to the desert to get there,” Leno said. “You lose your money and you come home. You can’t go to the desert again until you get more money. If you’re sitting at home and you’re up late at night and you got your little credit card, next thing you know … it’s like a mini bar.”

Frank immediately shut down that argument, pointing out that there were casinos all over the country in places such as Tunica and Atlantic City. He then explained that HR 2267 excludes the use of credit cards and only allows payments through debit and prepaid cards, theoretically to avoid having people gamble with money they don’t have.

Though the conversation shifted from online gambling to the lottery’s impact on education to the legalization of marijuana, Frank recapped his entire argument with one single point: “As a general rule, the government shouldn’t be trying to live people’s lives for them.”

Frank’s bill has also met some opposition from some California land-based casinos including the Bicycle Casino, Hollywood Park, Hawaiian gardens and most notably, the Commerce Casino. Commerce Casino board member Tom Malkasian testified in opposition to the bill during a hearing in front of the House Financial Services Committee in July.

Last week, Malkasian and fellow Commerce board member Haig Papaian issued a statement that California’s largest poker room supports online poker but the Frank Bill would “would ship jobs, revenue and taxes beyond our communities.”

Californians, according to state wide studies, wager an estimated $13.4 billion annually.

Pokerstars Note Taking

Just curious what you people do with the different colors for note taking on PS. Trying to organize my note taking to define different players and just want to see what others are doing and how they take notes. So far i only use a couple colors to define strong players and weak calling stations so i know who not to bluff and who not to get over involved with. As far as notes i just make notes of how they might have played a hand. i don't use any HU software so notes become pretty important to me in the long run.
Double Up SNGS on Poker Stars - which levels are easier?

Hey everybody, I've been playing a LOT of double up sit and goes, and so far I have a winning record on Cake and Merge at the $10 level.

I deposited $100 to Poker Stars to try them out, as it is totally obvious from PokerScout that Poker Stars gets at least 10x the traffic than either Cake or Merge.

So far, I have lost about $35 on the $5 Double Ups there (Turbo). The Turbo on PS compares to the standard Cake & Merge tournaments almost one for one in the blind escalation structure, and even the timing between blinds (5 minutes for PS, 6 minutes for Cake).

My question is, do you think the $10 DU's on PS are easier than the $5 DU? My friend Randall who introduced me to DU's said he thought the $10's were easier on Cake than the $5's, simply because the people playing the $5 ones were SO desperate for money they played tighter than the free wheeling $10 players. But he didn't have any data to back up that assertion, just a feeling.

If $10 DU's are easier on PS, I probably need to deposit more money, as $65 isn't enough to play that level. (It's probably not enough to play $5's either, but I think I can overcome that. I don't think I've even ever lost 10 in a row and I've played ~500 games).

I have folded so many hands or just not gotten into when I have medium pocket pairs that would have advanced me so far in torunies lately. Playing a game right now and would of quad'd up If I played my 88 for almost all my stack as no one played a pair the board was all low. Its these big time pushes that keep screwing with my head and I just got to get it my head, YOU HAVE HAVE GOT TO GAMBLE QUIT FOLDING GOOD HANDS

Best site for Deposit and Withdrawal

I was curious as to which sites may have the best deposit and withdrawal policies? i tried to deposit money into Full Tilt today and was unable to do so using two separate methods. I have never played on any other site so i would like to get some input as to what the easiest site would be to start playing real money.

I have played poker for a number of years

Hi all,
I have played poker for a number of years and pretty much know the general rules. The question I have though is about betting, which I havnt done much of. Ok, lets say we are playing Hold'em and I have a sweet hand. A player before me bets his last chip and cant go any harder but I want to. What happens? I am thinking I can only bet up to see his bet and everyone else can only do the same. Is this right? Pretty simple question I know but like I said I am only new to the betting side of it and any help will be appreciated.

I have played poker for 40 years. I can never understand the difference in the rules at poker rooms. Some rooms will go to the 6th card to break a tie....this is not good...lost a lot that way.!!!!!

Ive seen a couple of challenges from this boku87 guy on pokerstars. He did a 100k challenge and a 10k challenge. Both are impressive, obviously the $5 to $10k is the better one but it has made me wonder a bit since hearing how many SnGs he does at a time to achieve such a feat.

I saw a video on youtube of him multitabling 50 at once. Not only is this just sick and I imagine very very exhausting but doesnt this just contradict everything Ive learn over the past couple of months and all the reading and studying i have done?
The reasons i ask this are as follows:

Now dont get me wrong, i can see he is a very talented poker player but everything I have learnt about pot odds/ hand odds/ trying to read people/ watching how others are playing and if theyre bluffing or not etc etc the list goes on.

Ive come to a conclusion that this seems totally irrelevant in his situation. No doubt Im guessing he knows what hes doing but from seeing the video i dont care how good a player you are, even if youre Tom Dwan or Phil Ivey but this just doesnt seem like playing poker to me.

For one, Ive tried I think around 6 tables at once at the most and granted Im still quite new to the scene but i think its pretty much hard work trying to work out odds/positions etc when there is constantly a screen up to ask you to make your move. So you literally have a few seconds to make a decision so everything i learnt seems to go out the window as in reality it doesnt seem possible to take everything into the equation to make good proper decisions on if you should fold/call/raise/re-re-raise your opponents because you just cant keep track of whats been going on.

Now his video is even worse and like i say even if youre the best poker player in the world, he literally has a box popping up to ask to make a move every second of even less. Now this doesnt seem good poker to me and i cant work out how he strings out a profit in this? Maybe because he has so many at a time, hes going to get lucky in a few and get to final tables etc because the volume is so so high. I dont care what anyone says and I cant/wont believe that he can possibly implant all the required elements in poker (potodds/outs/position/bluffs/peoples betting patterns) to actually show good poker and stuff.

Im totally confused yet he has made a profit over the long-term, anyone any ideas on this? It has totally mind boggled me big time.

Ps: Over the past couple of months Ive noticed he barely made a profit of a top player. Like 1k in total? Yet this 2week challenge he managed 10k profit. Maybe he should just grind out the low limits like did then as he seems to make the money there much more??

Anyone with views on this to enlighten me would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, Im not in any way shape or form slagging him off, hes clearly remarkable and it works for him but like I said everything Ive learnt and what people tell me seems totally irrelevant?

Hey guys, i need a poker site where i can play some heads-up cash game. i already played on UB, it's nice but the rake at the smallest heads-up cash games tables are just killing, at 2nl me and a guy bought in for 2$ each, after about 100 hands and just small pots at least 1$ would be gone, which is crazy because i could never beat the rake.

so i need a site where i can deposit something like 40-50$ and play 2nl heads-up or 5nl heads-up.

waiting for suggestions.

and pls don't tell me to play sngs heads-up, it's just not the same.

Fulltilt Disconnects.... argh!!

I've been having some problems lately with Fulltilt disconnects. It's so disconcerting you're sitting there in tourney situation... worrying you're going to disconnect... ie. stacks deep enough to 3bet in hopes of getting it in... you 3bet then... 'bink'... the ol' disconnect... ARGH!!! It's just been happening to me since the last updates (happened before but not for awhile). Affects my play quite a bit as I'll find I'll start overshoving in fear of the dreaded disconnect.
Anyone others having problems on there lately? (everything else and all other sites are running smoothly on my computer... it's just Fulltilt that isn't).

I have rakeback on FTP, and they've got this Fast 50 thing going on. They offered me a $100 bonus, but is it worth it for me to accept since they deduct bonuses from rakeback? Wouldn't I just be getting my rakeback in the form of the bonus?

Not complaining this thread....just want to know how many players have mucked perfectly good hands because the board paired which means a 4-of-a-kind is possible? When I'm playing I always think ...he/she could have caught a set....or an outside chance of a fullhouse....I've never able to throw away a hand because my opponent may have (God forbid) 4 of a kind! My mind just never goes there.....! Should I give these hands any thought or just play my hand and when they come up....move on to the next tournament? (Assuming I pushed all my chips in because only 4-of-a-kind could beat me!:) :( :confused:
